Planet is a Greek word means wanderer. There are eight planets in our solar system.

  1. Mercury It is named after Roman god Mercurous, means god Of commerce , messenger of of god. Its distance from sun is 57.9 million km. It is smallest in size .It is a dead planet .It rises and sets with sun .It is not hottest even closer to the sun. Its surface is just like moon. Its has no moon.
  2. Venus It is named after Roman god of love and beauty, it is only planet named after a female. It is also called twin of earth due to same size and volume. It is hottest planet of our solar system. It is closest to earth after moon .It is very bright star, in evening it can be seen without microscope. It is 108 million km away from sun. A lot of carbon dioxide is found on its surface, it's temperature is very high ,it has no water so no life is possible here.
  3. Earth Earth is our homeland , all planets of our solar system were named after Roman and Greek god and goddess only earth is an English word which means ground.
  4. Mars It is named after Roman god of war. It is second smallest planet of our solar system. It is source of interest for scientists because it has signs of life due to presence of signs of water on its surface. It is second smallest planet of solar system. It is often referred to red planet. Mars and earth has same land mass. It has tallest mountain in Solar System. Sun sets from Mars is blue. It has two moons.
  5. Jupiter In Roman mythology it is named after King of gods. It is largest after sun .It is fastest spinning planet of solar system. It has 16 moons. It has clear big red spots. Its gravity is much more than earth. It has strips of different colors included white, orange, purple and red.
  6. Saturn It is named after Roman god of wealth and agriculture, so it is also called jewel of solar system. It is second largest and second fastest Planet after Jupiter. It has 18 moons. Helium gas is found on its surface. It is mostly made of gases so can float on water. Saturday is named after Saturn.
  7. Uranus In Greek mythology it is named after heaven. It is first discovered planet by scientists. It was discovered in 1781 by William Hershell. It is coldest planet of our solar system. it's colour is green due to lot of methane gas.
  8. Neptune It is named after Roman god of sea due to blue color. It is cold planet. It is four times larger than earth. It has 14 moons. Its the only planet of our solar system you cannot see without microscope. Its gravity is just like our earth.
